Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Multimodal vision therapy to develop binocular vision and improve clarity in the weaker eye. Effective for children and adults through monocular training and binocular integration.
Amblyopia Treatment DetailsComprehensive vision therapy in Chennai and Hyderabad designed to restore functional vision, improve visual-brain integration, and enhance quality of life for children and adults with binocular vision disorders, learning-related vision problems, and neurological visual conditions.
Standard optometry appointments test two things: whether you need glasses, and whether your eyes are healthy. For millions of patients with binocular vision dysfunction, oculomotor dysfunction, convergence insufficiency, or visual processing disorders, those tests return a clean result - "your vision is fine" - while the actual problem is missed entirely. Vision therapy addresses a fundamentally different category of condition: how the two eyes work together as a coordinated system, how the eyes move and focus under reading and near-task demands, and how the brain interprets the visual information it receives. Glasses and contact lenses cannot correct these conditions. Structured, clinician-supervised vision therapy can.
The 13 treatment programmes listed on this page span the full spectrum of functional vision conditions seen in our Chennai and Hyderabad clinics. Each programme is distinct because the underlying conditions are distinct: a child with lazy eye (amblyopia) requires a fundamentally different protocol from an adult recovering from traumatic brain injury, and both differ from a school-age child whose reading difficulties stem from poor eye tracking rather than a reading disorder. Treatment that is not matched to the correct diagnosis does not work - and in some cases, such as applying standard amblyopia patching to a patient whose reduced acuity is cortical rather than ocular, it is actively counterproductive.
This is why every programme at Caring Vision Therapy begins with a comprehensive functional vision evaluation, not a treatment recommendation made over the phone or from a questionnaire. Our 60-90-minute diagnostic evaluation assesses binocular vision status, accommodation (focusing), oculomotor function (eye movement), visual processing sub-skills, and ocular health before any clinical programme is recommended. Many patients arrive expecting to be told they need one specific treatment and leave with a more nuanced picture - frequently, two or three functional conditions coexist and must be addressed in sequence for lasting results.
Vision therapy is not limited to children, and it is not limited to rare or severe conditions. The patients we see span a wide age range and diagnostic picture. Children between 5 and 16 make up the largest group: many are referred because they are reading below their expected level, avoiding near tasks, losing their place on the page, or have been assessed for dyslexia or ADHD when the root cause is an undetected binocular vision problem. Paediatric vision therapy consistently produces measurable academic and functional gains in this group, provided the correct condition is accurately identified first.
Adults present most commonly with headaches during near tasks, intermittent double vision, digital eye strain that does not resolve with glasses adjustments, or reading fatigue that has accumulated over years. Many have lived with undiagnosed convergence insufficiency or binocular vision dysfunction for decades before receiving a diagnosis. Vision therapy in adults is highly effective for these conditions, with response rates comparable to those seen in paediatric populations when treatment compliance is maintained. Post-concussion and TBI patients form a distinct third group: neurological events frequently disrupt the visual pathways, producing diplopia, photosensitivity, balance disturbance, and reading difficulty that standard rehabilitation programmes do not adequately address. Our neuro-vision rehabilitation programme is specifically structured for this population.
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays frequently have co-occurring visual processing deficits that compound their primary difficulties and are rarely assessed as part of standard developmental review. Our vision therapy for autism programme and ADHD visual therapy programme are adapted to account for sensory sensitivities and attention differences, with session structures that differ significantly from the standard adult clinical model.
The programmes listed below are structured clinical courses - not printed handouts of exercises to perform at home without guidance. Each programme uses specialist diagnostic and therapeutic instruments, is supervised by our COVD/OVDRA Fellow, Member, and NORA-affiliated clinical team, and is adjusted session by session in response to measured performance data. The clinical outcomes we publish are drawn from this structured approach. Home-based practice is incorporated as a complement to in-clinic sessions - typically 15-20 minutes per day - but is not a substitute for the supervised clinical component. For patients unable to attend in person, a structured telehealth programme is available for appropriate conditions, with regular video-supervised sessions and progress monitoring.

Every treatment programme at Caring Vision Therapy begins with a comprehensive functional vision evaluation. This assessment identifies the specific combination of conditions present - because binocular vision dysfunction, oculomotor dysfunction, accommodative dysfunction, and visual processing disorder frequently co-occur and must all be addressed for lasting results.
Binocular vision dysfunction is present in the majority of patients referred for vision therapy. It encompasses convergence insufficiency, divergence excess, accommodative esotropia, and vertical heterophoria - each requiring a specific evidence-based treatment protocol.
Learn about binocular vision therapy →Oculomotor dysfunction - impaired eye movement control - is the most common cause of reading difficulties, line-skipping, and poor copying from the board in school-age children. Vision therapy specifically retrains the saccadic and tracking systems through progressive clinical protocols.
Explore paediatric vision therapy →Visual processing disorder affects how the brain interprets visual input - impacting reading comprehension, maths, spatial awareness, and visual memory. Specific sub-skills assessed and treated include visual motor integration (VMI), eye-hand coordination, figure-ground discrimination, visual sequential memory, spatial orientation, visual closure, and directionality. These deficits underlie academic underperformance in children with otherwise normal eyesight and intelligence, and frequently coexist with dyslexia, ADHD, and poor handwriting.
How vision affects school performanceCortical Visual Impairment (CVI) - also called cerebral visual impairment - is a neurological condition where the visual cortex cannot interpret what the eyes see correctly, even when the eyes themselves are healthy. It is the leading cause of childhood visual impairment in India and is strongly associated with premature birth, cerebral palsy, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), and periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). Standard eye tests return normal results in CVI, which is why it is consistently missed without specialist neuro-visual assessment. Our rehabilitation programme uses phase-based CVI intervention aligned with the CVI Range assessment framework developed by Dr. Christine Roman-Lantzy.
Learn about CVI rehabilitation in IndiaLow vision rehabilitation provides structured training with optical and electronic magnification devices for patients with AMD, diabetic macular oedema, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and other conditions causing permanent central or peripheral vision loss. We assess and prescribe the right magnifier type - spectacle-mounted, hand-held, stand, desktop CCTV, or portable electronic - matched to the patient's specific vision loss pattern and daily tasks.

Many parents search for answers to these specific behaviours before they know a functional vision problem could be the cause. If any of these apply to your child, a comprehensive vision evaluation is the right first step.
