Vision Therapy for NRI and International Patients
- In-Clinic and Online, India's COVD-Certified Specialists

Caring Vision Therapy has treated patients from the UAE, UK, USA, Singapore, Canada, Australia, and 15 other countries. Many families visit India specifically for vision care - because the clinical credentials here are the same as in London or New York, the waiting times are shorter, and the cost is a fraction of what the same programme would cost abroad. We have built a structured pathway for international and NRI patients that combines an intensive in-clinic block with telehealth follow-up, so the journey back home does not interrupt your treatment.

Quick answer: NRI and international patients can access the full range of vision therapy services at Caring Vision Therapy through two pathways: an intensive in-clinic block (typically 5–10 days in Chennai) covering the full evaluation and initial treatment sessions, followed by telehealth supervision from home; or a remote programme for simpler cases, where the evaluation is done in Chennai on a planned visit and all follow-up is online. All clinical reports are written in English and are suitable for sharing with any international specialist or insurer.

Why NRI and International Families Choose Caring Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is not widely available outside North America, the UK, and Australia - and in those countries, waiting times are often 3–6 months and costs are significant. In Dubai, a full vision therapy programme for a child with convergence insufficiency typically costs AED 15,000–25,000. In the UK, NHS waiting lists for paediatric vision therapy can stretch to 18 months; private programmes cost £4,000–£8,000. In the US, programmes run US$3,000–$6,000 out of pocket for most families.

At Caring Vision Therapy in Chennai, the same programme - delivered by a practitioner with more international qualifications than most UK or US providers - costs significantly less, and the first appointment is available within days. Our clinic is 3.5 hours from Dubai by air and 10 hours from London. For a family visiting India for an annual summer holiday, combining a vision care visit with a 5-day intensive programme costs less than a single month of sessions in the UAE.

Beyond cost: our founding director, Rabindra Kumar Pandey, holds COVD Fellow & Member, FAAO, MCOptom-UK, and NORA credentials. There are fewer than 20 practitioners in all of India with COVD certification. Most NRI families travelling to India for vision therapy are, in practice, accessing a higher standard of clinical care than is routinely available in their country of residence.

Chennai is 3.5 hours from Dubai, 10 hours from London, and 11 hours from Singapore by direct flight
All clinical reports are written in English, with measurements in internationally standard units, suitable for any overseas referral or insurance claim
Telehealth follow-up sessions are conducted via a secure video platform; equipment for home activities (Brock string, Hart chart, prism bars) is provided in a kit shipped internationally
We have coordinated care with neurologists, paediatricians, and occupational therapists in Dubai, London, Singapore, and Melbourne for complex cases
Patients can return for a full re-evaluation on their next India visit - many families schedule annual visits that combine family travel with clinical follow-up

Two Pathways for International Patients

The right pathway depends on the condition, severity, and how frequently the patient can visit Chennai. We will advise you on which is most appropriate during your first WhatsApp or video consultation.

INTENSIVE PROGRAMME

Intensive In-Clinic Block + Telehealth

Recommended for: convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, strabismus, post-stroke vision rehabilitation, CVI, and complex neuro-vision cases.

  1. Day 1: Full functional vision evaluation (90–120 min). Written report same day or next morning.
  2. Days 2–4: Daily in-clinic sessions (60 min each), establishing the foundation activities and measuring the initial response.
  3. Day 5: Review with supervising optometrist. Home programme and equipment kit provided. Programme outline for telehealth phase.
  4. Telehealth phase: Fortnightly 45-minute video sessions with your vision therapist. Home activities supervised and adjusted remotely.
  5. Return visit: Full re-evaluation at 3–4 months on your next India visit (or your next holiday trip).
REMOTE PROGRAMME

Single Evaluation + Full Telehealth

Appropriate for: mild convergence insufficiency, accommodative dysfunction, visual perceptual skills work, and maintenance programmes after a prior in-clinic course.

  1. Visit 1: Full evaluation on your planned India visit (one appointment). Written report and programme outline provided before you travel home.
  2. Telehealth weekly: 45-minute video sessions, once per week. Equipment kit shipped to your home address.
  3. Progress checks: Every 6 sessions, a 30-minute telehealth re-evaluation using the standardised measures available remotely (NPC, accommodative facility, symptom score).
  4. Return visit: Full in-clinic re-evaluation at 4–6 months recommended but not mandatory for simple conditions that are resolving on remote measurements.

Countries We Currently Serve

Most of our international patients are Indian diaspora families who have either been unable to access vision therapy in their country of residence or have been quoted waiting times or costs that are not feasible. We also see non-Indian international families who have found us through specialist referrals.

🇦🇪

UAE (Dubai & Abu Dhabi)

The largest single group of our international patients. Direct flights from Dubai (DXB) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Chennai (MAA) run daily, typically 3.5–4 hours.

🇬🇧

United Kingdom

NHS waiting lists for paediatric orthoptic assessment can be 6–18 months. Many UK-Indian families combine annual India visits with vision therapy care here.

🇺🇸

United States

Many US patients hold vision insurance that does not cover vision therapy. Indian-American families visiting India for family events often plan their evaluation around those trips.

🇸🇬

Singapore

4-hour direct flight to Chennai. We have treated several Singapore-based families whose children needed amblyopia, CI, or neuro-developmental vision therapy not available locally at comparable quality.

🇦🇺

Australia

Behavioural optometry is available in Australia but unevenly distributed. Indian-Australian families sometimes find it more practical to combine India travel with vision therapy care given the travel time and timezone convenience for telehealth.

🌍

Other Countries

Canada, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Germany, New Zealand, Bahrain, and others. If you are based outside India and considering treatment, WhatsApp us - we will tell you honestly whether the travel is worthwhile for your specific situation.

Practical Information for International Patients

Scheduling

Contact us via WhatsApp or the booking form with your available dates at least 2–3 weeks before arrival. We will block the appointments you need. The evaluation always happens on the first day; subsequent sessions are scheduled on the days following. We can fit up to two sessions per day for children over 8 on an intensive programme, with a minimum 3-hour gap between sessions.

Records to Bring

Bring any previous optometry or ophthalmology reports, school reports, neuropsychological assessments, and MRI/CT reports if relevant. For children: bring the current glasses prescription (we will refract independently but benefit from the history). We will ask for a brief medical history form at booking - complete it online so we are prepared on day one.

Language

All consultations, reports, and telehealth sessions are conducted in English. Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu are also available if preferred. Reports are in British English by default (suitable for NHS or Australian Medicare submissions) - let us know if you need US English for insurance purposes.

Invoices & Insurance

We issue itemised invoices for every appointment, with diagnosis codes (ICD-10) and procedure descriptions included. These are suitable for submission to UK private health insurers, UAE health insurance, and US HSA/FSA reimbursement. We do not process international insurance directly, but we will provide whatever documentation your insurer requests.

Telehealth After You Return

Telehealth sessions use a secure video platform. We schedule them to fit your timezone - early morning Chennai time (IST) aligns with evening in the UK and mid-afternoon in the UAE. Equipment kits (Brock string, Hart chart, loose prisms, accommodative flippers) are available to take home from the clinic or shipped internationally via standard courier.

Clinic Location

Our main clinic is in Ashok Nagar, Chennai - approximately 40 minutes from Chennai International Airport (MAA) by cab. We also have a Hyderabad clinic. Central Chennai has a wide range of accommodation at all price points within 15 minutes of the clinic. We will provide clinic address details and recommended nearby accommodation on request.

Questions from NRI and International Patients

Is it worth travelling from Dubai / UK / Singapore specifically for vision therapy?

For many conditions - convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, strabismus, post-stroke neuro-vision - yes. A 5-day intensive programme in Chennai, including flights from Dubai, is typically less expensive than 3 months of weekly sessions in Dubai or 2 months in London. More importantly, the clinical standard here is equal to or greater than what is routinely available abroad: our team holds international qualifications that most local providers in the UAE and UK do not. For mild or straightforward conditions, the answer may be different - the telehealth-only pathway may be more practical. We will give you an honest assessment of which is appropriate for your situation when you contact us.

My child has been on a waiting list for orthoptic assessment in the UK for 8 months - can you see them sooner?

Yes. We can typically arrange an appointment within 1–2 weeks for international patients who give us advance notice. A full functional vision evaluation (which covers everything an NHS orthoptic assessment covers, and considerably more) takes one appointment. Our clinical report is written in English and is suitable for sharing with your child's GP, paediatrician, or school SENCO. Many UK families have found that the COVD-level evaluation here has actually been more thorough than the NHS assessment they eventually received - because it covers accommodative and oculomotor function, not just acuity and cover test.

Can the telehealth programme work across time zones?

Yes. We currently run telehealth sessions with patients in the UK (IST-4.5h), UAE (IST-1.5h), Singapore (IST+2.5h), and Australia (IST+5.5h to +7.5h depending on state and season). For most locations, a session at 7:00–8:00 AM IST or 7:00–9:00 PM IST fits comfortably into a working day for the patient. We schedule sessions in 45-minute blocks and try to maintain the same day and time each week so it becomes a routine. For patients in the US, the time difference (IST-10.5h to -13.5h) is more challenging - we can offer early morning IST sessions that work as evening slots for Eastern/Central US, but West Coast patients may find the hybrid programme (intensive block + less frequent telehealth) more practical.

What should I do if my child's condition worsens while I am back home between clinic visits?

Any significant change - new double vision, sudden deterioration in acuity, or new neurological symptoms - should be assessed locally as an emergency; do not wait for your next telehealth session. We are not an emergency service and cannot replace same-day ophthalmology or neurology in your country of residence. For functional deterioration - for example, a child whose reading symptoms return between sessions - we always have a WhatsApp contact for patients currently on active programmes. We will advise whether the situation can be managed with a programme adjustment or whether an earlier India visit is warranted.
