Vision Therapy in Anna Nagar: FAQs
Is vision therapy effective for adults or only children?
Vision therapy works at any age. The brain retains neuroplasticity throughout life. Adults treated for convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, and neuro-visual deficits after stroke or TBI show measurable improvement. Outcomes are typically faster in children under 12, but adults respond equally well when the programme is sustained.
How many sessions does a full programme take?
Most programmes run for 16 to 36 weekly in-clinic sessions, depending on the condition. Convergence insufficiency resolves in 16 to 20 sessions. Amblyopia and strabismus take longer, typically 24 to 36 sessions. Each session lasts 45 minutes and is combined with daily home exercises of 15 to 20 minutes.
What is the difference between a vision test and a binocular vision evaluation?
A standard vision test checks distance and near acuity and prescribes glasses. A binocular vision evaluation assesses how both eyes work together: alignment, convergence, accommodation, tracking, stereopsis, and visual-motor integration. Many patients with 20/20 acuity still have significant binocular vision problems that a standard test will not detect.
What does COVD certification mean for patients?
The College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) Fellowship is the international benchmark for functional optometry. To become a Fellow, an optometrist must document 200 or more vision therapy cases, pass a comprehensive written examination, and demonstrate clinical competency in binocular vision, amblyopia, and learning-related vision problems. Fewer than 4,000 optometrists worldwide hold this status.
