What Tests We Run in Vision Rehabilitation

1
Visual Acuity Per Eye

Distance and near acuity tested monocularly and binocularly. Establishes the correctable baseline after the neurological event.

2
Oculomotor Motility

Full range of eye movement: smooth pursuits, saccades, vergence ranges, and fixation stability. Maps disruption to the oculomotor system.

3
Visual Field Assessment

Confrontation testing and automated perimetry where indicated. Identifies hemianopia, quadrantanopia, or scotomas caused by cortical or optic pathway damage.

4
Contrast Sensitivity

Tests the visual system's ability to distinguish edges and objects under reduced-contrast conditions: more predictive of functional vision than acuity alone.

5
Visual Processing Speed

Cognitive-visual integration: how quickly and accurately the brain processes the visual scene after neurological disruption. Critical for reading and navigation.

6
Prism Tolerance Assessment

Determines whether therapeutic prisms can immediately reduce diplopia, and what power and base direction is needed to achieve stable single vision.

All six tests are included in the initial evaluation. You receive a written report the same day, suitable for sharing with your neurologist or rehabilitation medicine team.

Vision Rehabilitation Conditions at Anna Nagar

01

Post-Stroke Vision Rehabilitation

Diplopia, visual field defects, oculomotor disruption, and visual neglect following ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke. Prism therapy, field expansion training, and oculomotor rehabilitation. Post-stroke vision rehabilitation Chennai.

02

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

Visual pathway disruption from hypoxia, infection, tumour, or surgical intervention. Evaluation maps specific deficits to the injury site and designs a rehabilitation programme accordingly. TBI vision rehabilitation Anna Nagar.

03

Age-Related Vision Decline

Age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other causes of irreversible partial sight managed through low vision rehabilitation: magnification, eccentric viewing training, and environmental adaptation strategies for older adults in Anna Nagar and North Chennai.

04

Functional Vision Recovery

Common Questions

Vision Rehabilitation Anna Nagar - FAQs

What is vision rehabilitation and who needs it?

Vision rehabilitation is a structured clinical programme for people whose visual function has been reduced by a neurological event (stroke, TBI, acquired brain injury), a systemic disease (diabetic retinopathy, multiple sclerosis), or age-related changes. It does not restore sight lost to retinal or optic nerve disease, but it does rehabilitate the visual skills that remain: eye movement control, binocular alignment, visual processing, and functional visual field use. Anyone experiencing new visual difficulties following a neurological event should be assessed.

How soon after a stroke should I seek vision rehabilitation?

As soon as you are medically stable and able to attend the clinic. Early intervention takes advantage of the neuroplasticity that is greatest in the weeks and months immediately following a stroke. There is no mandatory waiting period. Our Anna Nagar clinic can accommodate post-acute patients and will co-ordinate with your treating neurologist if needed.

Can vision rehabilitation help with double vision after stroke?

Yes. Diplopia (double vision) after stroke is commonly caused by a cranial nerve palsy or a disruption to the vergence and alignment systems. Therapeutic prism lenses can immediately eliminate the diplopia while the underlying system is being rehabilitated. Prism prescriptions are progressively reduced as the alignment system recovers. This approach is managed at our Anna Nagar clinic with regular review.

Do I need a referral from a neurologist to attend?

No referral is required. You can book directly at our Anna Nagar East clinic. Bringing existing neurological reports, MRI results, or discharge summaries is helpful but not required: the evaluation assesses the current visual state independent of prior clinical documentation. We provide a written report after evaluation that can be shared with your neurologist.

Is vision rehabilitation available for older adults with age-related visual decline?

Yes. Age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other causes of irreversible visual impairment are managed through low vision rehabilitation: a sub-programme within our Anna Nagar vision rehabilitation service. This includes optical magnification devices, eccentric viewing training, lighting optimisation, and practical visual strategies for daily tasks. For patients in North Chennai, our Anna Nagar clinic is the most accessible location.
