8 Tests We Run at Your Neuro-Optometric Evaluation

1
Visual Acuity Per Eye

Best-corrected measurement per eye, with and without prism correction, to establish functional baseline.

2
Visual Field Assessment

Amsler grid, confrontation fields, and automated perimetry where indicated. Detects hemianopia, quadrantanopia, and scotomata.

3
Ocular Motility and Pursuit Testing

Quality of smooth pursuit movements across all gaze directions, identifying oculomotor nerve or brainstem-level deficits.

4
Saccadic Accuracy Testing

Rapid targeted eye movements used in reading and scanning. Under-shoots and over-shoots indicate cerebellar or frontal pathway disruption.

5
Convergence and Divergence Ranges

Near vergence demand quantified to identify convergence insufficiency or divergence excess, common after TBI and concussion.

6
Accommodative Facility

Focusing speed and stamina under alternating plus and minus lens load. Accommodative insufficiency after concussion is frequently undiagnosed.

7
Suppression Depth Testing

Binocular rivalry and neural suppression depth measured. Central suppression can develop as a secondary adaptation to diplopia after neurological injury.

8
Visual Perceptual and Processing Speed

Cognitive-visual integration tests measuring figure-ground discrimination, form constancy, visual memory, and processing speed. Critical for TBI and stroke rehab planning.

Each test generates a quantified result. You receive a written report, not verbal feedback. Suitable for sharing with neurologists, rehabilitation specialists, or insurers.

Common Questions

Neuro-Optometry Anna Nagar - FAQs

What is a neuro-optometrist and why would I need one?

A standard optometrist assesses refractive error and basic eye health. A neuro-optometrist additionally evaluates the complete visual pathway: how the brain processes visual information, using specialist tests for binocular function, eye movement disorders, visual field, and processing speed. If you have persistent visual symptoms after a neurological event, or if standard eye tests have come back normal despite real symptoms, a neuro-optometric evaluation is the appropriate next step.

My MRI was normal after concussion. Can neuro-optometry still help?

Yes. Standard MRI does not detect the functional visual pathway disruptions that cause post-concussion vision symptoms. Many patients with persistent headaches, light sensitivity, and reading difficulty after concussion have a completely normal MRI. A neuro-optometric assessment identifies these functional deficits that imaging misses, and a structured rehabilitation programme addresses them directly.

Do I need a referral from a neurologist to attend your Anna Nagar clinic?

No referral is required. You can book directly. If you have existing neurological reports or MRI results, bring them as they help us plan the evaluation. We provide a detailed written report after your assessment that you can share with your treating neurologist if co-management is appropriate.

Can children have neuro-optometric problems?

Yes. Children with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, cortical visual impairment, sensory processing disorders, and acquired brain injuries benefit from neuro-optometric assessment. Our team at Anna Nagar is experienced with paediatric presentations and adapts the assessment approach for younger patients and those with communication differences.

How many sessions does neuro-optometric rehabilitation take?

Programme length depends on the diagnosis and severity. Post-concussion oculomotor rehabilitation typically requires 16 to 24 sessions for most patients. Post-stroke visual field rehabilitation may require 6 to 9 months. Your neuro-optometrist will give a specific estimate after the initial evaluation, with objective reassessment checkpoints built into the programme.
