Vision Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder
in India - Supporting Visual Development
Research shows that 50–80% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have significant visual problems - including eye tracking difficulties, poor binocular vision, and visual processing disorders. Yet these problems are routinely overlooked in standard autism management programmes in India. At Caring Vision Therapy's Chennai and Hyderabad clinics, we provide specialised visual assessment and therapy for children with ASD, delivered by COVD-certified specialists experienced in working with neurodiverse children.
Why Vision Matters in Autism Spectrum Disorder
Children with autism process sensory information differently - and the visual system is central to this. Research has identified a high prevalence of specific visual conditions in the ASD population: strabismus (eye turns), amblyopia (lazy eye), convergence insufficiency, poor visual tracking, hypersensitivity to visual stimuli, and peripheral visual dominance (a tendency to use the side rather than centre of the visual field).
These visual problems can directly affect a child's ability to make eye contact, engage with educational materials, perform daily tasks, and respond to social visual cues. Untreated visual problems in children with ASD can worsen behavioural presentations and reduce the effectiveness of other therapies such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA. At Caring Vision Therapy, we provide a visual assessment specifically adapted for children with ASD, using child-friendly, low-demand techniques.
Vision Conditions Common in Children with Autism
Strabismus & Amblyopia
Eye turns and lazy eye are significantly more prevalent in ASD. Children with autism may not report symptoms or demonstrate visible signs that parents recognise. Our ASD-adapted evaluation identifies these conditions even when verbal reporting is limited.
Eye Tracking & Saccadic Dysfunction
Difficulties with smooth pursuit (following a moving object) and saccades (jumping between words when reading) are common in ASD. These directly impair reading ability and ability to follow instructions - often misinterpreted as inattention or non-compliance.
Visual Processing & Sensory Sensitivity
Visual hypersensitivity (distress at certain visual patterns or bright light) and visual processing difficulties are core features in many children with ASD. Therapeutic lenses, tinted lenses, and graduated visual processing activities can reduce sensory overload and improve tolerance.
Vision Therapy for ASD at Caring Vision Therapy
Adapted techniques. Child-centred. Evidence-based. We work within each child's sensory and communication profile.
ASD-Adapted Visual Assessment
Standard vision tests require verbal responses and sustained attention - challenging for many children with ASD. We use objective, non-verbal, child-friendly assessment techniques including retinoscopy, cover test, and computerized assessment tools that minimise demand and stress while delivering accurate clinical data.
Individualised Therapy Programme
Therapy activities are adapted to each child's sensory profile, communication style, and tolerance level. We work closely with parents and existing therapy teams to ensure the vision therapy programme integrates smoothly with OT, speech therapy, and school support.
Parent Training & Home Programme
Parents receive clear guidance on home visual activities and how to incorporate them into daily routines. Consistency is particularly important for children with ASD - short, structured daily visual activities within familiar routines produce the best outcomes.
Progress Reporting & MDT Collaboration
We provide clinical reports suitable for sharing with the child's multidisciplinary team - paediatricians, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and schools. We are experienced in working within ASD multidisciplinary care frameworks across India.
