Binocular Vision Therapy
Chennai & Hyderabad
Binocular vision therapy trains both eyes and the brain to work as one system, treating convergence insufficiency, double vision, lazy eye, and related conditions. Our COVD-certified specialists in Chennai design individualised programmes using evidence-based protocols.
What Is Binocular Vision?
Binocular vision is the ability of both eyes to work together as a coordinated team, producing a single, clear, three-dimensional image. Both eyes must aim at the same point simultaneously, and the brain must fuse slightly different inputs from each eye into one image with depth perception.
When this coordination breaks down, the brain cannot maintain a stable single image - producing headaches, double vision, eye strain, reading problems, or dizziness. This is binocular vision dysfunction (BVD), and standard 20/20 tests routinely miss it.
Why This Often Goes Undetected
- Standard 20/20 tests measure acuity, not coordination
- Each eye may see perfectly but fail to work together
- Symptoms mimic ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, and fatigue
Binocular Vision Conditions
01 - Most Common
Convergence Insufficiency
Difficulty directing both eyes inward for near tasks, causing headaches, eye strain, blur, and reading difficulty. The most common binocular vision condition.
02 - Distance Vision
Divergence Insufficiency
Difficulty directing eyes outward for distance vision, causing double vision at far distances. Frequently missed in standard assessments.
03 - Eye Alignment
Strabismus (Eye Turn)
Manifest or intermittent eye misalignment. Binocular rehabilitation can significantly reduce or eliminate the eye turn in many cases without surgery.
04 - Lazy Eye
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Suppression of one eye's input at the brain level. Binocular therapy rebuilds the suppressed eye's participation in the visual system, going beyond patching alone.
Signs & Symptoms of Binocular Vision Problems
Key pattern: Symptoms triggered or worsened by near tasks and relieved by rest or closing one eye are the hallmark of a binocular vision problem.
- Skipping lines, losing place, or re-reading the same line
- Headaches after reading, homework, or screen time
- Double vision, constant or intermittent, near or distance
- Dizziness or disorientation in busy environments or when driving
- Covering one eye to reduce symptoms when reading or on screens
- Visual problems following brain injury, stroke, or concussion
Binocular Vision Therapy - How It Works
Every programme begins with a detailed clinical assessment and is individually designed for each patient's specific binocular diagnosis.
Binocular Vision Evaluation
We measure vergence ranges, fusional amplitudes, accommodative facility, suppression depth, stereopsis, and eye movement accuracy to precisely define where the system is failing.
Personalised Programme Design
Your therapy plan is structured in progressive stages, starting where the binocular system can succeed and increasing demand as function improves. No two patients receive identical programmes.
In-Clinic Therapy Sessions
Weekly 45-60 minute sessions using prisms, lenses, anaglyphic activities, vectograms, and dichoptic training. Each session is documented and adjusted based on measurable progress.
Home Vision Exercises
Daily home exercises reinforce the neurological gains made in clinic. Exercises are demonstrated and guided per patient; consistency at home determines the pace of recovery.
Binocular Vision Therapy FAQs
What does binocular vision therapy involve?
Binocular vision therapy is a structured programme of in-clinic and home-based activities using prisms, lenses, specialised instruments, and dichoptic training. Sessions are typically 45-60 minutes once or twice per week, combined with daily home exercises.
How long does binocular vision therapy take?
Convergence insufficiency typically improves in 16-24 weeks. Amblyopia and strabismus cases may require 24-52 weeks depending on severity, patient age, and consistency of home practice.
Is binocular vision therapy effective for adults?
Yes. The adult brain retains sufficient neuroplasticity for meaningful improvement. Adults with convergence insufficiency, BVD, post-concussion visual symptoms, and amblyopia all benefit from structured therapy at our Chennai clinic.
Is binocular vision therapy different from regular eye exercises?
Yes. Generic eye exercises are non-specific and not clinically validated. Binocular vision therapy is an individualised clinical programme designed after assessment of your specific binocular diagnosis, using specialist instruments and evidence-based protocols.
Are Headaches, Double Vision, or Reading Problems Affecting You?
Our Chennai clinic precisely diagnoses binocular vision dysfunction and delivers individualised therapy, not generic eye exercises.
