Lazy Eye or Squint?

Lazy Eye vs Squint:
What Is the Difference?

The two names are used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. A squint is about where the eye points; a lazy eye is about how well it sees. A child can have either, or both, and each needs its own treatment.

Quick Answer

What is the difference between lazy eye and squint?

A squint (strabismus) is a misalignment: one eye turns in, out, up or down. A lazy eye (amblyopia) is reduced vision in an eye that looks healthy, because the brain has not learnt to use it. A squint can cause a lazy eye, but a lazy eye can also exist with perfectly straight eyes. A squint is treated by realigning the eyes; a lazy eye by making the weaker eye work.

Spot the Difference With the Cover Test

Choose a situation and cover each eye in turn. A squint moves; a lazy eye objects.

Looking at the toy Covered Covered Right eye Left eye

Squint: the right eye turns in

Uncovered, the left eye looks at the toy and the right eye points in towards the nose. Cover the left eye and watch the right eye.

In everyday speech a squint is also called a lazy eye or a turned eye, which is where much of the confusion comes from.

When a Squint Leads to Lazy Eye

If one eye turns, the two eyes send the brain two different pictures. A young brain cannot cope with double vision, so it switches off the turned eye. Over months, that eye stops developing full vision: the squint has caused a lazy eye.

It also works the other way. An eye that sees poorly from early childhood has less reason to stay lined up and can drift. Either way, the two problems are treated together: vision first, then alignment. For the alignment side, see squint treatment; for the vision side, lazy eye treatment for kids.

How Each One Is Treated

Lazy eye is treated with up-to-date glasses, then eye patching or atropine drops, and binocular therapy that trains both eyes together.

Squint is treated with glasses where focusing drives the turn, vision therapy for intermittent and convergence-related squints, and surgery for large or constant turns. Surgery straightens the eye but does not fix the vision; see lazy eye surgery. Families in Chennai can read about squint treatment in Chennai and lazy eye treatment in Chennai.

Common Questions

Questions Families Ask

Is a lazy eye the same as a squint?
No. A squint is an eye that points in a different direction; a lazy eye is an eye that sees less well because the brain ignores it. They often occur together, which is why the names get mixed up.
Can you have a lazy eye without a squint?
Yes. A large difference in prescription between the eyes causes lazy eye with perfectly straight eyes. It is found only by measuring each eye's vision separately.
Can a squint go away on its own?
Some babies' eyes wander in the first few months and settle by about four to six months. A squint that persists or appears later does not usually go away on its own and needs an eye examination.
Which is treated first, the squint or the lazy eye?
Usually the lazy eye. Better vision in both eyes makes the squint easier to measure and treat, and gives the best chance that the eyes stay straight.
Does treating a lazy eye straighten a squint?
Sometimes partly, especially when focusing drives the turn and glasses correct it. Many squints still need their own treatment, with vision therapy or surgery.
