Your Question Answered

At What Age Does
Myopia Stop?

For most people the power settles somewhere between 15 and 21, when the eye stops growing. How much is added before then depends largely on when it started and what was done about it.

Quick Answer

At what age does myopia stop?

Myopia usually stops progressing in the mid to late teens. In a large long-term study, half of children had stabilised by about age 15 and around 95 percent by 24. Progression is fastest between 6 and 12, slows through the teenage years, and can continue into the twenties in people who do heavy close work.

Slide Through the Ages

Move from birth to adulthood to see how myopia usually behaves at each stage.

8 years

Babies and toddlers, 0 to 2

What is typical
Most are mildly long-sighted. Myopia is uncommon and, when present, is often linked to prematurity or family history.
What usually helps
An eye examination with drops, glasses if the power is high, and re-checks every few months.
Myopia in babies and toddlers

Preschool, 3 to 5

What is typical
Long-sightedness is fading towards zero. A minus power now is early and tends to progress for many years.
What usually helps
Full-time glasses, two hours of outdoor play a day and a plan for myopia control.
Myopia in a 4-year-old

Primary school, 6 to 12

What is typical
The peak years. Most myopia starts here and the power often rises by 0.50 to 1.00 a year without treatment.
What usually helps
Myopia control glasses, low-dose atropine, orthokeratology or control contact lenses, with reviews every six months.
Myopia treatment for kids

Teenagers, 13 to 17

What is typical
Progression is slowing. About half of young people are stable by 15.
What usually helps
Continuing control until the power has been stable for a year. Contact-lens options suit this age well.
When myopia stops

Adults, 18 to 39

What is typical
Most powers are stable. Small changes continue in some people who study or work at close range.
What usually helps
Accurate glasses or contact lenses, refractive surgery if suitable, and a retinal check when the power is high.
Myopia treatment for adults

Adults, 40 and over

What is typical
Distance power is usually unchanged, and reading up close becomes harder with the distance glasses on.
What usually helps
Progressive or separate reading lenses. A new rise in minus power after 50 needs checking for early cataract.
High myopia and its risks

Typical patterns. Individual children and adults vary.

Why Earlier Onset Means a Higher Final Power

A child who becomes short-sighted at 6 has around ten years of eye growth ahead. A child who starts at 12 has perhaps four or five, and those years are slower ones. This is why age at onset is the strongest predictor of the final number, and why treatment has the most to offer the youngest children.

What Keeps Myopia Moving After 18

A minority continue to change in early adulthood. The usual reasons are:

  • University or professional study with long hours of close work
  • Screen-heavy jobs with little time outdoors
  • Myopia that started very young or runs strongly in the family
  • A focusing spasm adding false myopia on top

When Myopia Control Can End

Control treatment normally continues until two things are true: the child is in the mid to late teens, and the power has been stable for at least a year. Low-dose atropine is tapered rather than stopped at once. A review six months after stopping checks that the power has not started moving again.

Common Questions

Questions Families Ask

Does myopia stop at 18?
Often, but not always. Many people are stable by 16 to 18. Some, especially students, continue to change slowly into their early twenties.
Can myopia start in adulthood?
Yes. Adult-onset myopia is usually low and linked to intensive close work. It is typically milder than myopia that begins in childhood.
What age should myopia control stop?
Usually in the mid to late teens once the power has been stable for a year. The decision is made at a review, not by age alone.
Does myopia get better with age?
No. In the forties, people with low myopia may find they can read without glasses, which feels like an improvement, but the distance power is unchanged.
