Myopia Control Glasses
DIMS and Lenslet Lenses
They look like ordinary spectacles. The difference is a ring of hundreds of tiny lenslets around a clear centre, which gives the eye a signal to slow its growth while your child sees normally.
Do myopia control glasses work?
Yes. Myopia control glasses use a clear central zone surrounded by many small lenslets that focus part of the light in front of the retina. In two-year clinical trials, children wearing these lenses for most of the day progressed about half as much as children in standard single-vision glasses.

A Clear Centre and a Treatment Ring
An ordinary lens puts the whole image on the retina at the centre but slightly behind it at the edges. That edge blur is thought to be one of the signals that tells a young eye to keep growing.
A myopia control lens adds a zone of lenslets around the centre. Each one brings a little light to focus in front of the retina, which is the opposite signal. The best-known designs are DIMS lenses (such as MiYOSMART) and highly aspherical lenslet lenses. The child looks through the clear gaps and the centre, so vision stays sharp.
What Could Halving the Rise Mean?
Set your child's age, power and last year's change. Compare the two lines at 18.

A Good First Choice for Most Children
Control glasses are the gentlest way into myopia control. Nothing touches the eye and there is no change to the bedtime routine.
- Children from about 6 who already wear glasses happily
- Families who do not want contact lenses or eye drops yet
- Younger children not ready to handle lenses
- Children with allergies or dry eyes that rule out contact lenses

What to Expect in the First Weeks
Most children adapt within a few days to two weeks. Some notice slight blur when glancing through the treatment ring, which settles as they learn to turn the head a little more.
The frame matters as much as the lens. It must sit level and close, without sliding down the nose, so the treatment zone stays lined up with the eye. Glasses that are left in the school bag do not work, so aim for all waking hours.
Give the Lenses the Best Chance
Glasses do more when the day is balanced. Set a typical weekday.
Day balance Move the sliders to score a typical day.
- Aim for two hours of daylight.
- Keep close work outside school to a sensible total.
- Break up close work every 20 minutes.
Targets follow widely used guidance: about two hours outdoors and a break from close work every 20 minutes.
